Frequently Asked Questions

What is Catnip?

Catnip is a member of the mint family and is also known as Nepeta Cataria. Approximately 80% of cats, especially those who have reached maturity, are irresistibly attracted to it. The essential oils in catnip, including nepetalactone, stimulate a cat's olfactory senses and will stimulate, entertain and relax your cat. Catnip naturally encourages playtime activity, relieves stress, boosts mood and supports cat health - from skin to digestion. It even acts as an insect repellent! Typically, when smelled, catnip excites cats and when ingested, catnip relaxes cats. Catnip is non-addictive and harmless to cats.

How is Catnip used?

Catnip can be used for your cat in many ways - such as in a toy, scattered loose or brewed as tea for your felines! We sell Catnip Sacks and Pouches, Loose Catnip and Catnip Teabags! Tip - you can scatter catnip in a bed if you wish to encourage a cat to use it, or put it around the bottom of a scratching post!

Why Fred's Catnip?

How should Catnip be stored?

We are experts in catnip! Our catnip is organically sourced in France and is the freshest on the market. We only use the plant leaves and flowers from the most recent harvest, with no hidden ground stems. We also process our catnip very carefully, unlike cheap 'sawdust' catnip - this crushes its flower bells and loses much of its essential oils. Fred's catnip is of premium quality for optimum potency - only the very best for your precious cat!

Can cats eat Catnip?

Catnip is perfectly safe to smell and ingest for cats. Just keep it to sensible quantities to avoid a mild upset tummy!

Are all your products eco-friendly?

Absolutely! We provide only organic catnip and our packaging is recyclable and/or biodegradable. Our Catnip Sacks are resealable and made from organic cotton and natural buckwheat hulls and our Catnip Teabags are made from biodegradable, non-woven fabric. Additionally, our Loose Catnip and Catnip Teabags are in recycled and resealable packaging. We also box our products with wood wool.

For maximum longevity, keep our catnip in a dark, dry, cool and cat-proof location! If kept in a sealed container away from direct sunlight, catnip should stay fresh for at least 6 months.

Is Catnip safe for humans?

Our catnip is strictly for cats! Whilst catnip is a gentle herb, there is currently not enough scientific research to guarantee that catnip is 100% safe for humans - only for cats!
